Personal review - we travelled on DFDS in March 2007 on a short break
from Newcastle to Amsterdam. We travelled on the m.s Queen of Scandinavia.
We has a seaways outside cabin with a sea view and this was a very comfortable
cabin, we were impressed with the size of the cabin and there was plenty
of space for luggage. The ensuite was very compact but had everything
we needed.
We went up onto deck to watch the ship leave Newcastle - definately interesting
watching the blokes undo the ropes and leaving the port shows you the
ship yards and dry docks on the port of Newcastle.
The restaurants are very nice with plenty of choice, including a child
friendly menu. It's worth browsing the buffet to see all of what's on
offer. There's soup and scandinavian starters, lots of main courses, salads,
desserts, fruit, cheese and bread. The choice is excellent and you are
served at your table with drinks. Breakfast is a similar affair with plenty
of choice from cereals, breads, croissants and pastrys, a full cooked
breakfast is available.
The evening entertainment in the bars gave you a choice of what to do,
and there's a cinema available too, as well as the pool and sauna.
Sleeping on board was slightly wierd with the ever so gently background
motion of the boat, the beds were soft and warm. You're woken up by an
announcement telling you when you'll be arriving in port, so there's no
need to set an alarm or worry about oversleeping. The cabins have a radio
in too so you can listen to this if you prefer to stay in your cabin.
There is the cafe on the 4th floor to buy croissants and coffee at - this
cost less than €10 for two of us to have breakfast.
Spending the day in Amsterdam was easy - there's a coach to drop you off
in town once you've been through passport control. The coach drivers tell
you what time you'll need to be back at the drop off point. The coaches
are clearly marked as DFDS so you'll find them easily when you get back.
You've then got a day to spend in Amsterdam so decide where you want to
go and have a great time! You can find out about what to visit if you
pick up leaflets from the information point onboard the ship.
The journey to Amsterdam from the ferry takes you past many giant wind
turbines, beautiful dutch buildings and so many bikes! Once you get to
Amsterdam you'll notice the massive number of cycles in Amsterdam - approximately
600,000. There are trams and canal boats to get you around the city or
you can hire a bike. Near the drop off point there are several touristy
shops where you can pick up some souvenirs - do this on the way back so
you're not carrying them round with you.
The return journey on the ferry is again peaceful and relaxing with a choice of great food and entertainment again. We're looking forward to taking the journey again as its a very relaxing mini cruise where you can eat plenty of good food and relax.
